“It’s about reacting to what you see, hopefully without preconception. You can find pictures anywhere. It’s simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what’s around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy.” - Elliott Erwitt Elliott Erwitt’s photographs have an almost childlike sense of curiosity.  One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned as a photographer is to approach the world with the expectation that it will give you these great little surprises, but you never know when or how they’ll come about. To me, Erwitt’s work embodies an openness to what’s possible. Image Via: Elliott Erwitt

I am curious about “mankind’s ingenious expression,” as the authors of (un)Fashion so aptly put it. I know that together we are a tapestry more dazzling than any one of us is alone.

One of my greatest curiosities as a young girl was my mother’s jewelry box. I’ve always had an affinity for all things shiny, and I’d wonder what the history was behind each beautiful piece.

I have had been fortunate to do some traveling in my life and through each experience I have learned that the moments when I’ve let curiosity lead me, rather than a destination or itinerary, are when I end up learning the most. It is through this lens of curiosity that I have been able to play soccer with children in Myanmar, pray with the monks, and ride on the back of a scooter through the streets of Vietnam.

My five-year-old son, Porter, embodies curiosity. His deep desire to investigate everything he comes into contact with keeps us all entertained.

Children are curious beings, and in turn they make me curious. Who knew a simple crack in the floor could captivate so thoroughly?

I am curious to see what new discoveries I’ll make, and where these experiments will lead. Even after countless unsuccessful attempts, it is the possibility of finding a new molecule that could one day save a person’s life that drives me to persevere.

An idea that is so fitting for so many circumstances.
