When designing The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, landscape architect and architectural historian Charles Jencks melded the symmetries of science and math with the chaos of nature. Located in Scotland and open to the public only one day a year, these otherworldly greens are a testament to Jencks’ duel passion for “landforming” and for wife Maggie, who inspired the garden before giving way to cancer in 1995. A “mix,” if you will, in the truest, most jaw-dropping sense.

The spine-tingling glee that comes with forging new paths, seeing new things—that surge of excitement, of feeling alive, Kerouac managed to capture in On the Road:Great Chicago glowed red before our eyes. We were suddenly on Madison Street among hordes of hobos, some of them sprawled out on the street with their feet on the curb, hundreds of others milling in the doorways of saloons and alleys. “Wup! Wup! Look sharp for old Dean Moriarty there, he may be in Chicago by accident this year.” We let out the hobos on this street and proceeded to downtown Chicago. Screeching trolleys, newsboys, gals cutting by, the smell of fried food and beer in the air, neons winking—“We’re in the big town, Sal! Whooee!” First thing to do was park the Cadillac in a good dark spot and wash up and dress for the night

Hmm…perhaps ‘wise’ is a 50/50 pie graph? If so, I’ll take me some of that.

A sweet, sideways spin on layering. (Wonky deliciousness, if you ask me.)

Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, I inherited the innate skill of making up pass-the-time games involving one of several things: lumps of coal, soda cans, or trees. I still have an affinity for the latter.

Here’s hoping my 40s usher in the confidence to rock this very look. Can anyone be more sublime?

Completely enamored with LIFE magazine. Can’t count how many covers they’ve shot with animals.
This is one of my favorites.
